What Makes a Great Hammock for New Hikers and Campers?
If you’re planning on taking a hammock rather than a tent for your camping trip, there are several things to consider. In fact, choosing the wrong hammock can cause you a big headache and, trust us, a back ache as well. So, to help we always judge hammocks for hiking and camping based on the following criteria. Whether you choose a simple design for hiking, or a decked out hammock tent, choose a hammock for camping and hiking that is:
- Pack weight: Most hammocks are feather light, but some include additional tent-like features and metal hooks that can become cumbersome to ultralight backpackers. For this reason, we consider only tents under 2 pounds for the front runners of our backpacking category. However, there are several great tents that include features to replace your entire tent, so there’s a great tradeoff here to leave your 4 lb tent and bring a 2-3 lb hammock/tent setup.
- Sleeping and Weight Capacity: Additionally, while many of us associate hammocks with single person use, there are tons of options if you’d like to bunk up with your partner. If you need a 2-person hammock, consider the weight limit as listed by the maker.
- Ease of Setup: Whether you’re just taking a mid-trail nap, or using your hammock as your overnight spot, it’s important how quickly and easily it can be put up. We excluded many options for this reason.
- Features: Finally, depending on where you’re headed, you may appreciate a hammock with additional features such as bug netting, a rainfly, or a gear sling.
Regardless of the hammock system you choose, make sure you also purchase straps to tie to a tree. And if you need hiking poles to turn your hammock into a ground tent (as with the Hennessy Expedition Asym) be sure to bring them along for piece of mind.
Worry-free Camping and Hiking
Setting up camp with a hammock instead pf a full tent has become a trend, and for good reason. Carrying a hammock is an ultra-compact way to pack light for the trail.
Plus, hammocks can offer superior comfort over hard ground. They are also extremely versatile and can be strung up nearly anywhere. We hope you fund the perfect hammock for your next adventure!
